As part of my job, I read a lot; that's how a I stumbled on this enlightening article from Tech Crunch. Considering what I do, I spend an inordinate amount of time on Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms. I was aware the larger corporations do manipulate information that is sold to help them in order to personalize advertisements you see in your feed. I had no idea just how deep that rabbit hole goes.
Will I stop using social media? Of course not! Will I close my business? No. I'm not a big impersonal business. It's just me, talking to the business owner and trying to help him/her/them get the best out of an omnipresent medium, which is continuing to grow. I carry on with due diligence, research trends, and do the best I can. My business code of ethics reflects my personal one - I want to sleep at night. I refuse to accept new clients whose business model is either too geographically close to someone else I help, or whose philosophy I don't agree with. Karma. In the event that I have two similar businesses asking for help, I refer them to a business buddy who lives locally and shares my outlook on a lot of things.
So even though this information feels a bit overwhelming, remember, most of us are real human beings, just trying to muddle through this social change with their sense of self intact!
